So here's what I think. I think we need to have a global council that gets together and discusses each countrie's problems and they deal with it all together. In my opinion that will really help. Once it's developed, we can start attacking the actual problems, like overpopulation. In order to slow down the growth and maybe even decrease the population, we obviously have to change. I think that if we start educating the people about the problems they're cause by having so many kids they will slow down a bit. Lowering the birth rate will decrease the population if the death rate stays the same. The only problem is with advances in technology and such death rates will decrease as well. Yes, that completes the demographic transition, which is good, but that still doesn't shrink the population. If we keep going we are going to do some immense damage. Take a look around you and see whats already done! But how do we do this? We can't just go around shooting people. The worldwide average TFR is 2.9, and in countries like Africa it is more like 4.3. We can't continue like this. Africa has 840 million people living there, making up 12% of the population. I say in countries like that we educate, and if that doesn't work we have to be a little more cruel. By doing things like restricting the number of children per family we should be able to decrease the populaton. If we don't, these conditions will continue. Since Africans believe the more kids you have the wealthier you are they aren't about to stop reproducing on their own. If restricting the number of kids doesn't work, we could always go to restricting the food..but I think that's a little harsh. What else can we do? We can't exactly go all Hitler on everyone and just decide on the mass murder of populations. Please let me know what you think.

Sounds good, Joce. I like the whole 'we can't go around shooting people' thing. That's very sensible. However, I'm not sure about the global council thing. Do you mean that we should combine the countries of the world under one government? Because I don't really agree that much with that idea. I would be afraid that the government would take over the world, because they would have posession of the entire planet. Other than that, I agree with pretty much all you said. It seems true that we might just have to restrict the number of kids allowed per family.

i'm not so savvy with some of your ideas. one in particular is the global council. like milea said, it will become like a dictatorship of the world. besides, we already sort of have something like that: the UN.
The restriction of kids can go both ways. In a good way, it will definitely decrease the population; on the other hand, some religions and/or cultures - much like Africa, as you said, Joce - have the "the more the merrier" idea. And in my opinion, people at least have the right as to what they believe. But, if we did the restriction in some countries, like developed countries, it would help some.
I agree with you that restriction of food would definitely be too cruel. And Genocide isn't the way to go either.
I believe what we can do is do the child restriction, but only with countries who don't believe in the idea i stated above. Have a sort of compromise and help more than one cause, you know? Restrict only one child per couple to people in countries who are okay with having it (i.e. US, Japan). Be for the people and not the government, I say.
Thoughts anyone?

Yeah I see exactly what you guys mean..but as in the global council, I don't mean for them to govern the world..more like a group of scientists, in a way. They research and things like that, work with each other and propose an idea to the people. They can choose to accept it or not, although if it's not the same rules applying to everyone we might not get very far. Although I have to admit going around shooting people would be fun . Anyway, I like the insight...I'd like to see us actually make a difference.
One thing that I have noticed tonight is that all of the different posts mention the same possible sollutions. I believe that birth control is a strong hold on the population. In today's world, the best way to avoid childbirth is abstinance, birth control pills, and condoms. In the future, however, there may be a drug that specifically limits the number of children a woman can have.
In my opinion, there's alot we could do to help improve population problems in the future. I think there should be education classes you must take before haveing kids so you could understand all the responsabilities you would have and also the money it would require. I also feel that if more people used birth control methods it would be a major help. I agree that there could be a council meeting to learn about these things.
Lucas, I disagree with you on the abstinance topic. I agree with Heather, that if we just educate the people about what they're doing and the consequences that might come they will be more careful and no drugs will be needed. We need to let everyone know abortion is always an option. Those who are pro-life and refuse to go through the procedure will have to be specifically targeted about being responsible.

no. that drug is clearly sexist and never going to happen. i'm sorry lucas, this idea just angered me and a lot of other people. i honestly can't even believe you suggested it.
