Smog!

Dec 5, 2007 at 7:26 PM by MeganW

I had no idea that smog was a harmful mixture of smoke and fog. This hazard can greatly damage the lungs of anyone in close contact with it. I had no idea that this was such a harmful thing, I always thought that it was just something that was in the air. Who knew that the fog outside could actually be smog? I don't know for sure, but there could be great amounts even in our area. I think that the greatest way to stop this would be to start walking to places whenever possible and not driving cars that release the harmful smoke. What other ways do you guys think could reduce smog?

I think we could reduce smog simply by not using up so much energy that produces harmful pollutions into our area. We can all contribute by just turning off light swtiches when we leave the room, using energy saving appliances, and hanging our clothes up to dry besides putting them in the dryer. One major way smog can be reduced in the summer is by not turning up your air conditioner so high. Even turning the temperature one or two degrees lower can greatly increae the amount of energy that is used.

I agree with Lindsey, by not releasing as much pollution into our environment. We shouldn't eliminate all pollution but definitely cut back. Gas and other minerals being burnt releases carbon dioxide and this also causes smog to form. Does everyone agree with this?

Smog is very harmful to everyone including the environment. If we cut back that would do a great deal to help the environment. Even though this will always be a problem, because smoke will always be produced, cutting back will still do a great deal. Not as much CO2 will be released and this will also help stop global warming.

I think all of these topics in some way are all tied together with one another.

Smog is definately a problem. We can help reduce it in the ways you've already mentioned, like driving less and reducing electricity. But sadly, smog mainly comes from large factories that put harmful pollution into the air. They are the ones making our air turn brown. It's a bigger problem to tackle, but I'm sure there are ways to help this cause. (I just can't think of many right now) smile

I agree with all you guys, especially when Milea says that it is mainly coming from large factories. One way that we could possibly stop this is to make harsher guidlines on the released wastes of factories. This would make them put out basically nothing or be forced to shut down.

Just because it's larger factories doing it doesn't mean it can't be stopped. We need to stand up to these big corporations. We can't think of them as being unbeatable or all-powerful just because they're run by super-rich white men. Them being super-rich white men makes them think that they can get away with things like setting up polluting factories. We shouldn't encourage that idea by not protesting their corruption.

Wow, I never knew that smog was so harmful. I think that in order to fix this problem we need to look at it from a different perspective, temporarily. We need to face the reality that smoke will most likely always be produced, and that eliminating smoke isn't the way to solve the smog problem. I think that we need to work around it and come up with solutions that will eliminate the mixture, not each individual component that causes smog.

Exactly. We are the people..ha, we can do whatever we please.

Megan this was my environmental problem that we had to do before. I think you chose a great subject to talk about. Like you said it can be very harmful. It can cause diseases such as cardiovascular disease and also certain types of cancer. I think that this is a problem that we need to focus on. Not only does it pollute the air but it harms the lives of others as well. I agree with your idea about walking instead of always driving. I think that by just doing things such as walking could result in the decrease of smog.

I think smog is definately a problem! That pollution from these factories like the one in Homer City can cause an effect on our health.
