Rain Forest Destruction

Dec 9, 2007 at 9:35 PM by TylerP

I think an environmental problem that the world is facing right now is the destruction of the valuable rain forests. These are important because they provide loads and loads of carbon dioxide to the world. We also get many medicines from the rain forest and there could be many more that haven't been discovered yet. The rain forest is being destroyed at an alarming rate, and at the rate that it is going, the world's oxygen supply will drastically drop because of how much the rain forest provides. People cut and burn the rain forest because they need the valuable soil to farm on. After a few years the soil loses all of its nutrients and the soil is useless. When the soil is useless then the people are forced to cut more rain forest to give themselves more farming land. I think we could solve this problem by providing the people with the gift and awesomeness of FERTILIZER!!! If they could feritlize the soil then it wouldn't run out of nutrients and they could farm the same land for many many years.

Good point. Besides the environmental issues, there are also people and animals living in the rain forest that are losing their homes..
Good post.

This is so true Tyler. Way to use your head!

I think that you chose a great topic to write about. I never thought about how valuable the rainforests are until you mentioned about all the oxygen they provide. I think that your idea of supplying fertilizer for the farmers is a very practical and useful one. This was a well written post.

Great post, Tyler. I think you proved a great point. People shouldn't waste our natural resources for something that isn't going to last that long, anyway. Plus all that wildlife that's going to be homeless. I don't think we as humans should mess with stuff like that. Once we destroy all of it, then we'll look back and regret it.

I'm glad you posted on this subject in particular because the rain forest is such a benefit to all of us and we just take advantage of it. Not individually of course, but we do just sit by and watch people destroy our main source of oxygen and potential cures for numerous diseases. Also, what I don't understand is why people think it's okay to destroy something as valuable as a rainforest that contains things that could only benefit us! But instead we are cutting them down and using them for things that in return give us a more unhealthy Earth, and just more environmental problems in general. The government is making a limited attempt to protect our non-renewable resources, but continue to allow industries to practically take away our rainforest, an extremely important non-renewable resource.

Tyler this is a great topic to disscuss. I agree that this is a great problem that we are facing today. Not only does it provide carbon to the world but it is also a habitat to thousands of animals. Nice post and good topic.

I really like the topic. I forgot how important the rainforests are to us. I do agree with a lot you are saying, but do you think global warming is an issue too?

Rain forests are so much more important than a lot of people realize. Like you said Tyler, there are medicines there that haven't been discovered. Another thing is how do we know that there isn't hidden cures in the rain forests? If we keep destroying rain forests, we have no chance of finding these cures or medicines. I think this is a great commitment. smile

I think that this is one of the biggest problems our world is facing. Like you said if the rain forests are destroyed a lot of our medicines and oxygen and carbon dioxide will start to deplete which os obviously not good.

this is a very good topic to write about. People dont understand how important the rain forests are to us. and not just us, but other living things as well. People are concentrating so much on themselves and their countries that they dont realize that they are actually only harming themselves. There is always so much talk about looking for a cure for cancer or aids, or some other deadly disease....but still, they go and ruin the rainforest and ruin their chances to do something amazing and find a cure to some of the strongest world wide problems...

the rainforest is such a beautiful place. why would you want to cut it down?

Kaylyn, Global Warming is an issue, as well, but let's not forget that the burning and destroying of rainforests is one of the causes of global warming. When we burn rainforests, carbon dioxide is released into the air, contributing greatly to global warming. Lots of these world problems are linked.

I think we should all go and sit in the rainforest tree branches, so that they can't cut the trees down or burn them...well, that idea might not be the best, but it would definately work.

Interesting fact: 14% of the world was once covered in rainforests. Now, it is down to 6%. The rainforest could be gone in less than 40 years, according to www.rain-tree.com/facts
